Car crashes are the leading cause of death for KIDS with MORE THAN 2,000 children 14 years and younger dying and nearly 300,000 injured each year. Child booster seats are designed for children 4-8 years old and are a known lifesaver when properly used with lap shoulder belts. However, over 60 percent of parents and caregivers still do not use booster seats.
Ohio now has a booster seat provision in the law to address proper
restraint for children that are too big for a child safety seat with a harness
restraint system, but not quite big enough for the car's seat belt system
to fit them the way it is intended for older children and adults.

Study reaffirms effectiveness of
booster seats

Children ages 4 to 8 who ride in booster seats placed
in rear vehicle seats are 45 percent less likely to be injured in a
crash compared with those of like ages riding only in seat belts,
according to a new Children’s
Hospital
of
Philadelphia
study.
Compared with similar previous research that primarily
examined passengers ages 4 and 5, the new study observed injury rates
among children ages 4 to 8, including many ages 6 and 7.
Due mainly to new booster seat laws that include
requirements for 6- and 7-year-olds, the number of young passengers
using booster seats has tripled in recent years, according to State
Relations Manager Jennifer Ryan. Though 47 states and the
District of Columbia
have booster seat laws, upper-age limits differ greatly by state, with
only 25 requiring booster seats for those up to age 8 – the age
advocated by CHOP researchers.
“This research confirms the continued need to
advocate for better booster seat laws that mirror best practices,”
Ryan said. “The data will help those states that are looking to pass
or improve their booster seat laws in 2010.”
